The days of the standard household remote control are changing from simply allowing us to flick through the free to air TV networks from the comfort of the lounge. Hand held remote controls have come full circle in the new world of wireless technology and their applications in marine environments are becoming increasingly popular and affordable. BY Cesar Petersen Household remote controls which once transformed peoples approach to everyday living as a matter of convenience have now progressed to the next phase of convenience and comfort. It has given those who can afford the "finer things in life" and who wish to take advantage of their free time, the opportunity to be more relaxed and comfortable in their surroundings thanks to the sheer convenience of the remote control and ACS. Since the seventies, the advent of the household remote control has set the precedent for other areas to become more remote control friendly. The late seventies saw remote controls being used in children's toys on a more frequent and entertaining basis. Everything from the popular slot car racing track using cord remotes to remote control toy boats or model aircraft using radio controls. Remote control systems and toy boats are just as popular today as they were years ago, although the scale of the toys and their applications are considerably different. The pool or bath tub where the model boats were once put through their paces, have been replaced with a new pacesetting playground, the "Ocean"- the home of big boys toys. Controls these days can be integrated into various on board marine systems from sail boats through to more luxurious motor yachts. The systems available range from wireless remotes for controlling on board entertainment systems and the most basic hand held satellite navigation (GPS) control systems to state of the art, fully automated docking (manoeuvring) systems which control bow and stern thrusters as well as engines and gearboxes, from a handheld remote or joystick. These systems come in various forms and have advantages over traditional docking methods.
