AGENDA 128 | ocean Iain Murray has been part of the Australian yachting culture for more than 30 years. He has one of the most readily recognisable names not only in Australia but throughout world yachting circles. His involvement in racing yachts is vast including stints in 18 footers, Etchells, Star Class, Sydney to Hobart races, the Admirals Cup and most famously the America's Cup. He has recognised with the growing International Superyacht market (expanding at a rate of 10 % per annum world wide) that there is a significant opportunity for the Australian boat building industry to expand and compete in this global market. A major property developer in his own right his vision is to establish a New South Wales based site to cater for the production and refitting of larger sailing and motor yachts. With the demand on skilled labour at a premium he is looking at setting up a world class site to attract a skilled work force. Iain also agrees with Bill Barry- Cotter's (OCEAN May/June 2005) views on overseas labour not only being permitted but encouraged to enter the country to assist with the expansion. He is an advocate for the training of persons in Australia and from overseas whether they are school leavers or skilled persons looking for further challenges in the industry. Iain's love and passion for the boating industry has also led to the formation, in recent years, of Azzura Marine Group. It currently produces custom sailing and motor yachts under the Azzura name and the Sydney Yachts brand of production yachts. Iain has also found time to expand the companies activities into large sailing and motor yacht construction and the refit/repair market servicing local and international clients. This expansion is due to his vision for these vessel's and services and demand from international designers for more options to build and service such vessels in Australia with the skilled work force and technologies it has to offer. Iain is extremely optimistic about the future of the marine industry in Australia and sees it becoming an increasingly large world-wide manufacturer of production and custom sailing and motor yachts of all sizes. However with the development of a junior sailing dinghy known as "The Nippa" specifically designed to introduce children and young adults to the world of yachting Iain has not lost sight of where he has come from. He sees this to be his most exciting venture to date and is keen to pass on some of his skill's and enthusiasm to the sport that has been such an integral part his life.
